There are many people who are terrified of going to the dentist. Perhaps they had a bad experience when they were a child or the thought of needles and tools in their mouth makes them queasy. Whatever the reason, here are some things that you can do if you feel anxious about going to the dentist.
1. Opt For Laughing Gas
Initially, laughing gas was used to help people with pain management. Although it does take a little edge off of the pain, the thing it really helps with is calming nerves. In some cases, your experience at the dentist is far worse because you are psyching yourself out. If you just relax, the whole experience wouldn't be so bad. This is exactly why nitrous oxide, or laughing gas, is so helpful.
You can get laughing gas the moment you are put it the room. In most cases you can just let your technician know that you are feeling a little anxious and that you would like something to help you relax. You can then use the laughing gas as much, or as little, as you want.
To make it even better, the effects of the nitrous oxide dissipate quickly. This means that you shouldn't have any trouble driving home or going to work.
2. Break Up The Appointment
If you know you will need to get a cleaning, as well as some fillings, you might feel better doing it in two different appointments. This is because the longer you are there, the harder it might be to stay calm. A simple cleaning may be easier to handle than a cleaning and some filings.
In addition, doing the fillings separately will allow you to get the numbing shots immediately so that you don't experience as much pain and discomfort. This is one way that many people are able to handle going to the dentist.
3. Don't Skip Check-Ups
Even though you might not like the dentist, do not skip your check-up! Each time you miss your cleaning and x-rays, you are potentially missing cavities. If you detect a cavity early on, the dentist can correct it easily. However, if you wait and let the cavity grow, you could need serious dental work, such as a crown or root canal. This will only make going to the dentist worse. Thus, stay on top of your appointments. Then going to the dentist should be easy and manageable.
